Wanted….Dead or Alive

So….. If your reading this now, it means that I’ve made it to Lahsa, Tibet. Which is where I am. It wasn’t as difficult as it’s made out to be although it was an adventure. So the first day i was able to catch a bus from yunnan province into the first city in Tibet (mangkam), no problem. slept the night at a whore house with the other people I was with, two malaysians and a japanese guy. next day we all get on the bus to go farther and sure enough me and the japanese guy (kazoo) get kicked off before we even leave, money refunded luckily. we met up with two hong kong kids and tried to get a taxi to the next city, the taxi drivers were trying to charge way too much, and one skin head tibetan kept following us from taxi to taxi telling the drivers how much to charge us. i kept telling him to go away. finally we got a truck driver wisper to us that if we walk for ten minutes he’ll come pick us up and take us for the proper price. the van came, unfortunately it was followed by a car of angry taxi drivers who kept blocking our way. we got out and the van went way up ahead, the car with drivers came up to us and i told them to go away again, the skinhead guy got out and tried to kick me but the other people stood in front of him, he thought i was swearing at him. finally the car took off to find the van, and we flaged down a postal delivery truck who let us hide inside and we drove past the van being blocked by the car. the angry drivers saw us in the postal delivery truck though. so about ten minutes later the van comes up and told the postal driver that the angry people had called the police at the next check point, so we got out and back into the van. we drove an hour or so and when we got near the check point we got out and dressed as chinese as we could (thus the picture) then we climbed a hill to avoid the check point while the van drove through it and picked us up on the other side. from there it was perfect for the rest of the day. we got to a hotel and had a good sleep. the next morning me and the kazoo tried to hitchike for a while but there weren’t any cars that early, finally around 9 in the morning saw a bus pull into the small town and we asked about tickets, no problem, the bus was a sleeper (16 bunk beds on a bus, pretty comfortable), so after two days and one night on the bus (and a stop over at a small tibetan night club, including attempted tibetan line danceing) we made it to lahsa. no problem. in the next few days i’m going to mount everest, now i’m going to eat.

Goodbye rosie, the queen of caronas…

I made it, i’m here in the land of all things “made in china”. It’s been about three days here but already i’m super glad to be out of vietnam, the very north is alright but the rest sucked, i recommend against you all going there. go to china instead. the chinese people have been super nice already always trying to help a clueless brother out (except for the fact they constantly talk to me in chinese knowing fully well that i have no idea what they are saying?) the food is better than the new china buffet and peking palace (for those of you in the greater glendale area). i’m in a place called dali wich is an old chinese city in the mountains that’s kina been renovated for tourists (mostly chinese tourists), it’s still really laid back and cool old buildings, and chinese people, and that song that goes maya he, maya who, maya ha ha. i’m hoping to continue north west of here (dali, yunnan) and make it to tibet next week or something, although i heard it’s difficult or expensive to get a visa there, or maybe both. anyway, china rocks and i’m gonna enjoy it here, techno and kareoke everywhere, heaven on earth?

Dead Ho’s and deader dogs

I saw me a dead ho today, his name was Ho Chi Minh. He’s the first embalmed communist dictator i’ve ever seen (i’m pretty sure), it was exciting, lots of army people with guns and lots of red flags with hammers and sickles and yellow stars, and one dead dictator. I’m in hanoi by the way, i haven’t written in a while cause….I don’t know actually, i’ve been a bit frustrated by vietnam in general and i don’t really recommend anyone coming here, it kinda sucks. anyway after checking out the royal dead guy, i went for lunch to a random market here in the city and sure enough the market was full of dead and roasted dogs, how do you know they were dogs you ask? easy just look at the basket full of dogs heads. so anyway i got some pork and vegetables for lunch but of course some random people sit next to me and get a whole bunch of dog, and they keep putting it on my plate, and i hate to be rude. it’s not so bad, just lots of bones, although the skin is a bit tough. so now i’m just out wandering the streets waiting for a few days while my visa to china is being processed. i’m hopefully going to be in china within a week or so, i’ll be glad to get outta here, although china might be equally as difficult for the random whitey. we’ll see, for now i’ll have to be satisfied with the $.12 cent glasses of beer to wash away my problems.

Holiday in cambodia….(part 2)

some more craziness? that’s right, i’ve officially been robbed again. i’ll try and explain to the best of my abilities but it was all very quick and i’m still a bit confused. so….i’m having some drinks at the guest house (dolphin shack) here in sihanoukville and i supose sometimes one drink leads to another. so i get tired and i go to sleep in the hammock while all the other people are watching the world cup, then i get up to go pee (about 3:00 in the morning) in the ocean but i walk out on the beach at an angle from this guest house then i walked straight up the beach to go back to sleep if you can imagine a triangle with the ocean at one point the first hammock at the second point and the second hammock at the third point, anyway back to the point, i went to sleep in a different guesthouse where they don’t have as many employees (or any at all at 3 in the morning) so then i wake up at about five in the morning and someones hand is in my cargo pocket, the side pocket on the shorts, and they say “is this your money” and i was still half asleep thinking it was my original guest house and i said yes why, then they pulled the little coin bag (my wallet just not an actual wallet) out of my pocket and started to walk away. as you can imagine i was thouroughly confused so i walked after him for a few steps saying wait a second, give me back my money. these guesthouses have no walls so you can see right from the road to the ocean and they arent very big, but anyway so he steps into the road and gets on a motorbike and drives away. again i was really confused i just woke up, but for some reason there was another guy standing right next to me on an empty road at 5 in the morning. so i kinda grab his arm and try and explain that i think i’ve just been robbed but he doesn’t get it, so then i pull him to my original guesthouse and there are lots of people sleeping all over the place so i kinda wake up the people who work there and told them to ask this random guy what happend because he saw it all. the owner of my guesthouse is a police officer, so the cop takes the three of us to the police station and i go through what happend with the police and then they bring me back for a few minutes but the random guy stayed at the station. so then me and one of the employees at my guest house (translator) went to a different police station where the random guy had been brought to….as a suspect? so sure enough this is what happend, this guy was watching for people to go to sleep then he was going to steel from them he saw me go to the guest house that was empty so he came over to me and sliced a hole in one pocket (i didn’t even notice for about half an hour that i had a big hole in the side of my pants) then he went in one pocket and grabbed my passport, then apparently a motorbike pulled up so he got scared and hid in the shadow while another guy came and took the coin bag out of my pocket? it’s confusing to me also. so then the motorbike guy took off with my money and maybe the random guy who for some reason let me pull him around and give him to the police had my passport (i just thought he would be a good witness i had no idea he was part of it). so where does that leave me…..well the police got a confession out of the random guy which led to the names and arrests of the other guy who apparently works with a few people and they got arrested, maybe? they said three people were arrested when i left the police station (9:00 AM) and before i left, sure enough, my passport shows up. so the police actually are holding the passport for evidence? but i’m getting it back tomorrow and going to phenom phen. i still lost the coin bag, and what was in there of course my money to pay the bill for the past week because i was going to leave this morning so i wanted the money handy about $60 and the magical paypal debit card, yup it’s gone. so i’m fine over all i lost about $60, a pair of $2 pants, and the debit card. it sucks but this is life here and i know quite a few people have had their cameras and mp3 players stolen, one girl got her entire backpack stolen here, so yes there is crime and lots of it…..but it’s still so nice here, why else would i stay for two weeks. that’s about all the excitement, except that all the guesthouses are closing tomorrow (they lost the land dispute) so they say tonight is going to be a big party…..i’m locking everything in the owners house where they watch everything closely. they said that they can’t find the money because there are two more boys they are looking for but can’t find, and maybe they have the money? i wish i knew what was going on, i do know that when they were putting the random guy into jail he didn’t want to go and i saw them kicking him down the hall and punching him in the head and stuff, so i image it won’t be too nice for them but i’ve also heard people can just pay their way out of things here, so they may not be there long. that’s about all i’m gonna go rest (2:30 PM).

Ice age comes and ice age goes

so here i am, again in cambodia. this time i’m in the eastern part. i’m not sure what to say about it so far i’ve only been here for about a week. i came from laos following the mighty mekong, through some islands in southern laos which are nice and relaxing, i also got to swim in the river and check out some huge waterfalls and stuff it was nice. i’m slightly drunk now cause some people on the street here made me drink shots of rice whisky, so can’t remember some of the more amusing things that have happened recently. i know for a fact since i’ve gotten into cambodia i’ve been covered in a red dust that is hard to wash off even with soap. today i took a mini-van with three rows of seats from one little town (kratie) to here (kapong cham) the minivan had at least twenty people inside with four more on the roof and two scooters on the roof and lots of cargo. it’s kinda crazy here compared to the rest of asia, there don’t seem to be any laws or rules that aren’t fixed with a little money to somebody. i’m not sure where i’ll be heading next but probably to phenom pen which is the countries capital. then i’ll probably be heading down into the southern islands for a few weeks before heading into vietnam. today was also the first time i’ve turned down a hotel room judged by the looks of it, normally i don’t mind dirty, this wasn’t just dirty but the bed barely fit into the room and the only thing they seemed to sell at the front desk (normally water or soday or some small food or something) was condoms, yes i’ve yet again walked into another whore house. ok that’s all for now, i’ll try and sober up a bit and let you know some more stories later……or not
